Sundays are spiritual days. It doesn’t matter if you’re from New York or Arkansas, everyone knows it. Sundays are quiet days. Church happens on Sunday. Family happens on Sunday. Football happens on Sunday. And we all know football is a spiritual activity.
We are now at the highest point of anticipation in the football holy weeks (known as the playoffs) – the week of silence before the Super Bowl. Football fans all over America will be twitching with anticipation by the time the game comes on the evening of Sunday, February 1.
The Super Bowl is the single most watched US broadcast television event of the year. It has become the second-largest food consumption day in the US, following Thanksgiving. In fact, a writer in the State Department said Super Bowl Sunday should just be considered a national holiday. In short, it is kind of a big deal.
The problem is that, once again this year, the inconsiderate people who schedule the Super Bowl failed to consult The Journey about our service schedule. The big game will conflict with our evening services at Hanley Road and in the Metro East.
So what are going to do? Watch the game, of course!
(My title is a little tongue-in-cheek. We still want you to come worship with us, so we are making other opportunities available. Hanley Road is encouraging those who attend in the evening to show up at the 11:15 service. The Metro East is moving its service up to 2 p.m.)
Why would we do this? Because the Super Bowl offers us as followers of Jesus a unique and valuable opportunity to connect with our neighbors and those outside the church. People will be gathering in homes and local restaurants all over our city – and this is a tremendous opportunity to simply step out and build relationships. Hopefully we will be able to see a good game, enjoy some good commercials, and make some new friendships with people outside the church.
So find out if there will be a party in your neighborhood – and if not, maybe you should host one. If that isn’t your scene, find out where people in your community are gathering – and go hang out with them. Have fun and make friends. Eat some good food and drink some good drink – and see what conversations God brings your way.
So, on Sunday, February 1 – be spiritual, enjoy yourself, and watch the game.
